2002 CHEVY B4C CAMARO
FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL UNIT #1955
The B4C Camaro was the first 2-door pursuit vehicle the Florida Highway Patrol purchased after a long period of using 5.0 Mustangs ending in 1993. In 2002, the FHP purchased 200 of these B4C Cameros. Each was identically equipped with the low profile light bar, radar units, laptop and shotgun mount. All units are dressed in the traditional FHP two-tone colors Black/Tan. These colors act as camouflage while sitting in the tall tan weeds in the center median along the black roadway.
These Camaros were purchased specifically for capturing aggressive drivers and speeders. These cars are extremely fast and are equipped with the aluminum Corvette LS1 motor rated at 310 hp. However, the FHP added a pcm chip and a computer flashing which placed the total horsepower at 365 hp. These cars were routinely clocked at speeds of 165+ during driver training on the road course at the Tallahassee police academy. Only senior troopers were assigned these vehicles because of the overwhelming concern of overdriving the car and high speed collisions.
FHP Unit #1955 was assigned to Troop (B) in the Lake City region. 1955 was put into service on May 10, 2002 and was retired from service on August 23, 2006 with 73, 865 miles. This 35th Anniversary edition Camaro was one of only 708 B4C (police package) Camaro’s produced that year and was the last year of the Camaro until recently. Of the original 200 cars purchased, more than 60% were destroyed in traffic collisions. Only a handful has survived to be restored to reflect their original Law Enforcement heritage.
FHP Unit #1955 has all of the period correct equipment used when in-service right down to the 800MHz antenna, shot gun rack, laptop mount and wooden mounting platform for electronics in the hatch. This equipment could not be used on any other FHP vehicle and thus is almost impossible to locate.
This car is part of the private collection at Classic Auto Rides in Monroe, NC This rare and unique vehicle is strictly for show and special events.
