1969 FORD Mustang Mach 1

DOCUMENTED – RARE – MUSCLE CAR

428 R-Code - “Super” Cobra Jet

4-SPEED – W Code DRAG PACK 4:30 Traction Lok

Ford delivered on the promise of a rejuvenated, redesigned Mustang in 1969, offering a wide choice of engines and a brand new model, the Mach 1, which took over from the GT. Taking advantage of both the Boss 302’s handling and a total of five engines larger than the 302, the Mach 1 attracted over 72,000 new Mustang buyers.

The most powerful production engine was the R-code 428 Super Cobra Jet rated at 335 horsepower, which was automatically triggered by choosing the Drag Pack 3.90 or 4.30 rear end. Breathing through a new Shaker hood scoop, the SCJ propelled the new Mustang to 13-second quarter mile times.

This beautifully restored 1969 Mach 1 is a textbook example of one of the wildest Mustangs ever built. Dressed in its factory original and gorgeous Candyapple Red exterior paint with Gold side-piping and Black interior, it comes with a Deluxe Marti Report listing two codes that place this car higher on the ladder than almost all other Mustangs: the W-code 4.30 Drag Pack with Traction Loc, and the R-code 428/335 HP Super Cobra Jet V-8 stuffed with NASCAR-grade internals, with a Top-Loader 4-speed for maximum fun. WOW !

Matching Numbers Engine and Drive-Train. Professional Concours Restoration. Documented with the Deluxe Marti Report. This head turner was sold new in Cherryville, NC at Marvin S. Beam, Inc. on January 3, 1969. The car was actually built on December 13, 1968 – three days behind schedule. Only 2 changes from the factory conditions were made during restoration to improve drivability – first a Hurst shifter was installed along with a 3.50 rear gear.

This rare SCJ Drag Pack Mach 1 invites close inspection, revealing quality and attention to detail worthy of its value as a milestone Mustang.

Documentation / History

Mustang was restyled for '69, gaining 3.8 inches of body length -- all ahead of the front wheels -- and about 140 pounds of curb weight. The flowing lines looked right in new Mach 1 livery. This was the mainstream performance version. It came standard with a 351-cid V-8, but star of the stable was the optional 428-cid Cobra Jet.

Essentially the same V-8 that put Ford muscle on the map in the 1968 1/2 Cobra Jet Mustang, it came in three states of tune for '69. The base version without Ram Air cost $224; $133 more bought the fresh-air induction system, which this year used a new "shaker" hood in which a scoop mounted to the air cleaner protruded through a hole in the hood and vibrated ominously with the engine.

A third version triggered by the $155 Drag-Pack option was the 428 Super Cobra Jet Ram Air. It used the shaker scoop, plus a modified crankshaft and stronger connecting rods for better high-rpm durability, as well as an engine oil cooler that decreased lubricant temperature by 30 degrees. The Drag Pack came with limited-slip 3.91:1 or 4.30:1 cogs and excluded air conditioning. All versions used a four-speed or Ford's improved Selectshift automatic. And all were underrated at 335 bhp.

But the Cobra Jet's most-pertinent product was torque enough to send the F40xl4s up in a haze of Polyglas. With 3.91:1 gearing, even the automatic broke 'em lose at each full-throttle upshift.

But this was the Mustang Ford fans had waited for -- cheaper than a Boss 429, less temperamental than a Boss 302, and a force anywhere fast cars gathered.
